Originating as popular Canadian rock group Theset, the band members stuck together as friends and musicians for subsequent projects, scoring music for independent films and re-entering the scene as electro outfit Blitz//Berlin with a three-song debut mixtape to their name. "Drink" is the quintessential opening track, with siren-like electronic wails, slow beats, and lyrics that tell of what it feels like when the darkness comes after the party's over all blending into an irresistible concoction. That being said, the next track "Outside" is my unarguable favorite, with its dark, hypnotic guitar riffs and synth sounding just as good when they're slow as when the speed increases, keeping the listener alert throughout the whole song while also providing them slower, quiet moments to reflect before they return to their dancing. "Legend" polishes off the mixtape nicely, with its slightly muffled sound and mantra that even if you're heralded by many, a "legend", that you still "can't be everything to everyone" and that you should always strive to meet your own needs. Though I wasn't familiar with their previous incarnation as Theset, I can always respect bands that allow themselves the creative freedom to travel from one end of the genre spectrum to the other, which makes Blitz//Berlin's initial release even more impressive than it already is. If you'd like to get your hands on their mixtape, all you have to do is head over to their website and sign up for their mailing list to get a free download. With more music to come, I highly encourage getting hooked on Blitz//Berlin now!
